Expedition Overview
Rakaposhi Mountain is in the Nagar Valley of Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan. Rakaposhi is ranked 27th highest mountain in the world and 12th highest in Pakistan. Rakaposhi is more popular for its beauty than its rank might suggest. Rakaposhi means “Snow Covered” in the local language. Rakaposhi is also known as Dumani (“Mother of Mist”). The mountain is extremely broad measuring almost 20km from East to West. It is the only peak on Earth that drops directly, uninterrupted, for almost 6000m from the summit to the base. Considering the mountain’s bulk it is slightly surprising that there are only three completed routes to the summit. SW Spur This is considered the easiest route and is consequently the most popular.

Besides the highest peak of the Rakaposhi massif is Rakaposhi East (7010m). This peak also holds significant value to Geologists as it is the prow of the Eurasian land mass with Nanga Parbat representing the prow of the Indian land mass.

After six failed Expeditions, Rakaposhi was first climbed in 1958 by Mike Banks and Tom Patty, members of a British-Pakistani Rakaposhi Expedition, via the Southwest Spur/Ridge route. Both of them suffered minor frostbite during the ascent.

In local Burushaski language Rakaposhi means “Shining Wall” (not to be confused with Gasherbrum I which also means “Shining Wall” in the local Balti language). Due to the mountain’s prominent position in the centre of the Hunza valley many have considered climbing the peak but relatively few have attempted the summit. For this reason the mountains maintains a certain enigma for many who visit the area. Rakaposhi is not easy to climb from in any direction. Western routes are very long, northern routes are very high and technically difficult, and southern and eastern routes are plain dangerous due to extreme avalanche risk.

Trango Adventures operates a 40 days long “Rakaposhi Expedition”. We have been offering our services to Expeditions in Pakistan for the last 40 years. Our Rakaposhi Expedition package is on full board services till the base camp. The duration may be longer or shorter depending on the clients experience and ability.

Our Rakaposhi Expedition starts from Islamabad. Our Representative will Meet & Greet you at Islamabad international airport, then transfer you to the hotel for a rest to recover from the journey. We will meet in the afternoon for a briefing about the Rakaposhi Expedition. Next morning we will start our adventure towards the North on the famous Karakoram Highway.

We will spent the night in a luxury hotel in Chillas Town then continue our Journey along the Indus and Hunza River to Minapin. The scenery and view of Nanga Parbat on the way from KKH is stunning. Minapin is a small, cozy village and the starting point for both Rakaposhi and Diran base camps. Next morning you will start early, as the sun’s rays are quite lethal from very early in the morning.

The Rakaposhi base camp is one of the most epic camping spots you have ever been to. From here onward your Non guided Rakaposhi (7,788m) Expedition will start. During the climbing period our staff will be at base camp to help and assist you. Our professional Chef will make delicious and most nutritious food During the trek and climbing Period. We strongly believe that good nutritious food plays a vital role during mountain Trekking and Expeditions. After the climbing period, we will follow the same itinerary back to Islamabad
